Marshall Beats No. 21 WVU, 75-71

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (KDKA/AP) - On Monday, West Virginia was ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time this season, but that might not last long after the No. 21 Mountaineers lost to Marshall 75-71.

WVU, coming off a 68-64 win over then eighth-ranked Purdue, shot only 33 percent from the field and saw its four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers scored the fewest first-half points (21) of the season and could not dig out of their 14 point deficit to start the second half.

West Virginia ended the first half and started the second without a field goal for more than 11 minutes.

Senior guard Casey Mitchell led West Virginia with 18 points, four rebounds and two steals. John Flowers contributed with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Joe Mazzulla and Truck Bryant scored 10 each.

West Virginia returns to Big East play with a home game against South Florida on Sunday. Then, they will play three of their next four games against ranked Big East teams.
