This Week In Panthers Athletics

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Spring has come and all the Pitt Panther athletic teams are in action this week. The Panthers baseball team is 12-5 this season and will be playing five games this week.

The Panthers will open Big East play against UConn in Storrs, Conn.

The Panthers softball team will playing a doubleheader against city rival Robert Morris today with the first pitch at 3 p.m.

THIS WEEK IN PANTHERS ATHLETICS
March 21, 2011

BASEBALL

Pitt (12-5) plays five games this week, including two home contests at Charles L. Cost Field. The Panthers host Akron on Tuesday, March 22 at 3 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. homestand against Penn State on Wednesday, March 23. The Panthers open Big East play in Storrs, Conn. with a three-game series against Connecticut beginning Friday, March 25 and concluding on Sunday, March 27. Game times are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday. Pitt is coming off a 4-0 weekend at the first-ever Petersen Sports Classic.

SOFTBALL

The Panthers (17-6) open the week with a doubleheader against Robert Morris on Tuesday, March 22, with first pitch at 3 p.m. Pitt faced the Colonials on Friday and earned a 1-0 victory in eight innings during its 4-1 outing at the Radford (Va.) Invitational. Pitt concludes the week with a three-game series at Seton Hall to begin Big East play. Action starts on Saturday, March 26 with a noon doubleheader. The two teams meet again on Sunday, March 27 at 11 for a single game. The Panthers are off to their best start in school history, including 10 shutout wins. Alyssa O'Connell holds a 0.69 ERA with five shutouts.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Pitt will play its third match in five days on Tuesday, March 22, when it faces Duquesne at 12:30 p.m. The contest is hosted by the Dukes and will be held at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club in Harmar, Pa. The Panthers have won the doubles point in their last three matches.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Panthers travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the two-day Raleigh Relays beginning on Friday, March 25. Last week, Pitt opened its outdoor season at the Charlotte 49ers Classic in Charlotte, N.C. The men's team posted 11 top-eight finishes, while the women's squad notched 15 top-eight performances.

MEN'S SOCCER

Pitt will continue its spring schedule on Saturday, March 26, hosting California University at 3 pm. at Ambrose Urbanic Field at the Petersen Sports Complex. The Panthers saw their first competitive action of the spring season with an exhibition contest against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Sunday at PSC, marking the first home soccer event at the brand-new facility.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Panthers will host two games at the Petersen Sports Complex this weekend. On Saturday, March 26, the team plays a Pitt Alumni 7v7 tournament beginning at 11 a.m. The following day, the Panthers face St. Francis at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 27. All games will be played at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

PANTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY

The Panthers will participate in the Muscle Team Event; Muscular Dystrophy on Thursday, March 24. Then, Pitt's wrestling and cheer and dance teams will host the final Panther PAWS event at Trees Hall on Saturday, March 26. The two-hour program begins at 10 a.m.
