Police: Suspect Yelled, 'We're Going To Have To Shoot Our Way Out'

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Allegheny County Police have released new details in a home invasion that led to the shooting of a Clairton police officer.

Officer James Kuzak was shot three times in the 800-block of Miller Avenue around 10:45 p.m. and is now listed in critical condition.

According to investigators, two adults – a man and a woman – and an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy were in the house.

Two suspects armed with guns knocked on the door, looking for drugs and money. The man and woman then called 911.

Three Clairton police officers responded to the call and split up. Kuzak took the back door. One of the suspects was heard yelling: "We're going to have to shoot our way out." They started shooting through the back door, hitting Kuzak.

He was hit in the right forearm, the left side and in the shoulder/clavicle area which is the most serious injury.

Doctors say there is a possibility Kuzak could have suffered paralysis, but it's too early to tell.

There was also an attempt to sexually assault the woman in the house. The man in the house was roughed up in the home invasion.

No officers fired any weapons during the incident.

Both suspects ran away from the scene. Myles Hutchinson was arrested in North Versailles. He is facing a list of charges including, six counts of recklessly endangering another person; four counts each of robbery, aggravated assault and unlawful restraint; two counts of assault of a law enforcement officer and one count each of criminal conspiracy, criminal contempt, indecent assault and burglary.

Police did not release the name of the second suspect still on the run.
