Greensburg Diocese To Review Yukon Church's Finances

YUKON (KDKA) -- The Diocese of Greensburg has launched a financial review of a Westmoreland County church.

Parishioners at Seven Dolors Church, located on Center Street in Yukon, contacted diocese officials when they became concerned the books weren't adding up.

Since October of 2008, Father Emil Payer has handled pastoral duties. Earlier this month, the diocese of Greensburg hired an independent auditing firm to conduct a review of the church's finances after parishioners voiced concerns over church money.

Parishioners who spoke to KDKA-TV didn't want to go on camera, but expressed sadness over the situation.

Diocese officials aren't saying much at this point about the allegations, but did release a statement confirming the investigation and saying that a priest from another parish will handle business for the church until the probe is complete.

"The Diocese has also been aware of the rumors circulating in the parish and Yukon communities. A report will be made to the parish after the financial review is completed and the facts are known," Jerry Zufelt, a diocese spokesperson, said.

The investigation is still in its early stages, but at this point, no criminal activity has been found and police have not gotten involved.
