South Connellsville Family Speaks Out After Staircase Collapse

SOUTH CONNELLSVILLE (KDKA) -- Four family members are recovering after the staircase to their second-floor apartment collapsed.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon on West Gibson Avenue. The victims in the fall KDKA-TV they feel lucky to be alive.

Brittany Behnke sprained her wrist. Her sister, Jillian Behnke, broke her foot. Their mother, Hazel McKendry sprained her ankle and Jillian's little boy, Kane Cole, got a cut on his chin.

Jillian's boyfriend, Marlin Cole, was stuck in the apartment with no way to get down after the stairs collapsed. He watched helplessly from above as neighbors rushed to help his family members who were pinned in the rubble.

The stairs are the only way in or out of the apartment. The family was hoping to get their cat out sometime today. They are not sure when the stairs will be fixed so they can return home.
