Man Allegedly Uses Kids As Human Shield In Shooting

SWISSVALE (KDKA)-- There are new details about the local man who used his two children as human shields during a shooting.

The man lied to police about his identity, instead claiming to be his best friend.

It turns out there was also an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Police arrested 18-year old Desmond Lyons of Homewood, but he claimed to be Curtis Reynolds, his best friend, also of Homewood.

Police say if you put the pictures side by side, it is hard to tell them apart.

It was when Lyons was fingerprinted that police knew he had lied.

Trouble began for Lyons Monday afternoon in Swissvale a little after 3 p.m.

Two men approached him about money they say he owed them. Police say that's when Lyons pulled out a gun and began firing while holding his children, ages 2 and 3, in his arms, using them as human shields.

Surveillance video from Murry's Café in Swissvale shows the two men Lyons allegedly shot at while running away.

Police say when they caught up with Lyons, he shoved the children at them, dropped a bag of toys and kept running.

He was arrested a short time later.

The children are fine. Lyons is in the Allegheny County Jail and his best friend, Curtis Reynolds, has been cleared.

Lyons was already wanted for back child support payments, but this recent incident has landed him in jail on $500,000 bond.
