Investigation Continues After Gunshots Near Wave Pool

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police continue to investigate after shots were fired Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot outside of the main entrance to the wave pool at Boyce Park.

It started as a fight inside the pool. A police officer on duty kicked out the fighters. Then, shots rang out in the parking lot.

Bullets pierced a traffic cone, window frame and the top of the booth entrance.

Swimmers were hustled out of the pool and bullet casings littered the parking lot.

According to Allegheny County police, six to seven shots were fired; however, it remains unclear how many guns may have been involved in the incident.

Allegheny County police officials were back at the pool today.

"One incident is one too many," Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt said. "We intend to take any steps necessary to make sure the pool and the surrounding areas are safe."

Witnesses say when they heard the gunfire; they didn't know what to think.

"I thought it was firecrackers at first so I [sort of] glanced … and all of a sudden I [saw] people scattering so I knew it was gunshots," said Bill Sopcak, a witness. "We just ran behind the wall toward the fence."

The pool opened Thursday as scheduled, but few people came out despite the hot temperatures.

"There was one here last year and it didn't stop me from coming," Michelle Horwitz, of Bloomfield, said. "As long as police are here I think it will be fine."
