SUV Crashes Into Wilkinsburg Duplex Overnight

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- Authorities say a 15-year-old girl was behind the wheel when an SUV slammed into a duplex in Wilkinsburg overnight.

The crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. at Coal Street and Stoner Way when officials say the teenager lost control of the vehicle.

The impact of the accident caused a young man inside the home to be thrown from a chair. Officials say he suffers from multiple sclerosis. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out but is fine. There were no other injuries.

"All the sudden, we heard a loud crash," said LaGene Evans, a resident living in the duplex. "I ran to the living room where my other son was sitting and opened up the door, and I saw the truck in the side of my house."

The vehicle, with five teens inside, was became lodged in the building.

"They were getting out of the truck and they started walking up the street," said Evans.

Officials say the driver initially fled, but police were able to detain her. She is facing numerous motor vehicle violations.

Building inspectors determined this morning that the family who lives on the side of the duplex that the SUV barreled into may be out of a place to live for at least some time.
