Charges Pending In Uniontown Sword Attack

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) – Police say a man was attacked with a sword by his brother-in-law, but a family member says it's all a misunderstanding.

Alice Lawwill was there when it happened and says the victim wasn't viciously attacked.

The three men were drinking on the front porch of the family's Cleveland Avenue home in Uniontown when Lawwill's daughter walked outside with a 24-inch sword that was brought home from the Korean War by a family member.

The victim, Wayne Bailey, suffered two severed arteries in his forearm. He was taken to Uniontown Hospital and was later transferred to Pittsburgh for treatment.

"He's doing better," Lawwill said. "He got released yesterday from the hospital. They had to do surgery on him. They had to suture an artery and some tendons and stuff like that, but he won't be able to use his arm or his hand for about, I'd say 12 weeks."

Police got a different story. Wayne Bailey told them that two men at the house were involved in a confrontation with the sword so he tried to intervene and was attacked.

Bailey's girlfriend told police she even had to pull the sword-wielding man off her boyfriend so she could take him to the hospital.

Uniontown police say charges are pending in the case.
