State Police Probe 6-Week-Old Baby's Injuries

GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- A 6-week-old baby girl is in intensive care at Children's Hospital and now police are investigating.

The alleged incident happened on Sept. 10, 2011 at a home on Phillips Road in Unity Township.

The girl's parents took her to the emergency room at Latrobe Hospital because she seemed to have trouble breathing.

Doctors gave the girl a CT scan and concluded she had bruising and bleeding on the brain.

The baby was then taken to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh where a social worker told police the child's injuries were likely not accidental.

An emergency room physician at Excela Health explained the protocol when a child is brought in with a head injury.

"First of all, you're going to stabilize a child and look for any life-threatening injuries and then we're always looking for suspected abuse in other cases and the most important thing there is looking for injury patterns and to see if they're consistent with the history you're obtaining from the family," Dr. Greg Harbaugh said.

State police in Greensburg are investigating this incident as an aggravated assault.
