2 Killed, 2 Injured In I-79 Crash In South Fayette

SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — Two people are dead following a crash on Interstate 79 in South Fayette Township.

"We have one fatal from each vehicle, a total of two deceased, two females," State Police Trooper Robin Mungo said.

Two men are hospitalized – one with life-threatening injuries.

One of the men is in Allegheny General Hospital.

The two-vehicle accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-79 around 1 p.m.

A car traveling northbound went out of control, crossed the median, flew over a ridge and hit a southbound vehicle head-on.

"We're unsure which vehicle was going northbound at this time, so we're going to reconstruct this crash here," Mungo said. "But, one vehicle hit the other head-on."

State police say they aren't sure what led to the crash.

"Anything's possible," Mungo said. "It could be someone fell asleep – we just don't know. We don't know. We don't know if it was a medical situation, someone fell asleep, if there was something that happened inside of the vehicle."

Stay with KDKA for a full report on this developing story.
