Officials Identify Women Killed In I-79 Crash

SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Authorities have released the identities of the two women who died in an accident Thursday afternoon on Interstate 79 in South Fayette Township.

State police say 22-year-old Elizabeth Gilbert of Prosperity, and 66-year-old Katherine Wright of Rivesville, W. Va., were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The two-vehicle accident happened in the southbound lanes of I-79 around 12:30 p.m. just north of the Washington County line.

According to state police, Gilbert was behind the wheel of the 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix, which was headed north on I-79 when it crossed over the grassy median hill.

It then hit a 2008 Toyota Corolla, which was going southbound. State police say Wright was a passenger in that car.

The male passenger in Gilbert's car was taken to Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

The man who was driving the car Wright was in was taken to Allegheny General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The accident tied up traffic on I-79 for hours on Thursday afternoon.
