Runners Take To Streets For Great Race

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The 34th annual City of Pittsburgh Great Race saw a record number of participants take to the streets Sunday morning.

According to race officials, a record of 14,500 people took part in this year's Great Race. The previous record was set last year with 14,000 participants.

The first Great Race was held back on Sept. 25, 1977 and 26 men have run in every one.

The festivities got underway with a 5K walk and run at 8 a.m.

Mark Grogan, 22, of Pittsburgh, won the 5K men's event with a time of 15:15.

Heather Melzer, 42, of Mars, won the women's 5K with a time of 18:27. She also won this event in 2007 and finished third last year.

The 10K race got underway around 9:30 a.m. and was just as exciting.

Curtis Larimer, 25, of Pittsburgh, won the men's division with a time of 30:48.

Lisa Burnett, 28, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, won the women's 10K with a time of 35:15.

For Burnett, it was her first ever 10K race and she hopes to run in the Olympics one day.

Race officials said that 9,603 people participated in the 10K race and 4,897 people participated in the 5K race.
