Local Students Raise Big Money For KD Turkey Fund

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – We are coming down to the wire for donations to the KD Turkey Fund this year.

KDKA-TV's Rick Dayton has been all over the area for the past couple of weeks and was most recently at Wexford Elementary School.

Wexford Elementary's Ram Reader Program is an annual affair that raises money for the KD Turkey Fund.

The kids there really understand the importance of the event and the KD Turkey Fund.

"Absolutely they do. They really did understand and the kids were very committed to reading their books every night," Keri Brown said.

A total of 587 families will receive a Thanksgiving dinner because of their  efforts.

Thanks to matching funds, the check totaled more than $17,000. Just this morning, they added $500 more.

"The smiles on their faces tell that they did something to help others. I think that in itself goes to show you that people do pay attention and they do care," Jim Balouris from PNC Bank said.

In seven short years, 5-to-8-year-olds at Wexford Elementary have helped raise more than $90,000.
