ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A man accused of robbing a local coffee shop Wednesday morning has been arrested.

According to Ross Township Police, 32-year-old John Hammel was taken into custody around 7 p.m.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. at the Island Bean Company near the Northway Mall along McKnight Road when a silver-blue Honda van came through the drive-thru. Officials say there were several witnesses and the incident was caught on surveillance video.

According to Ross Township police, the suspect got into the business through the drive-thru window and managed to take some money from the cash register. Two female clerks were working inside at the time.

Authorities say the suspect may have had some type of hammer, according to initial reports.

KDKA’s Ross Guidotti reports that Ross Township police say one of the clerks reportedly grabbed a pot of coffee and threw it at the man.

Hammel is being lodged in the Allegheny County Jail.
