Woman Killed While Changing Tire On Route 40

REDSTONE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Police continue to investigate today after a young woman was killed and her friend was critically injured when they were struck by a car while trying to change a flat tire in Fayette County.

The accident happened around 8 p.m. Thursday along Route 40 in Redstone Township.

Police say the woman, believed to be in her 20s, and a male friend were trying to change the tire when they were struck by an oncoming vehicle.

KDKA's Ross Guidotti reports:

According to police, the woman was wearing a reflective, fluorescent safety vest and the hazard lights on the vehicle were on.

"[The road] doesn't have much of a shoulder and the vehicle was partially on the shoulder and partially on the roadway with the hazard lights flashing," said Sgt. Norman Howard, of the Redstone Township Police Department. "They were to the rear of the vehicle, partially in the roadway."

The impact sent the woman's body into the road. The male was found unconscious lying by the guardrail.

Investigators say the driver of the oncoming vehicle did stop and is reportedly cooperating with police.

KDKA's Kym Gable reports:

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment and was last listed in critical condition.

Redstone Township police continue to investigate.
