A-10 Player Of The Week, Duquesne's B.J. Monteiro Sidelined With Injury

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- After becoming the 35th player to reach 1,000 career points in Duquesne's New Year's Eve crushing of Houston Baptist, senior swingman B.J. Monteiro (Waterbury,Conn./Crosby) was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for his dominating play last week.  In the Dukes' two wins last week against HBU and Bowling Green, Monteiro  shot nearly 67 percent from the field and averaged 26 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists, including the 24 point, 14 rebound double-double he put up last game.

On the season, B.J. is second in scoring with 15.2 point per game ,behind Sean Johnson's 16.1, and leads the team, grabbing 5.7 rebounds per game. Duquesne will certainly miss his production, as he will be out the next 2-4 games after receiving stitches in his left hand and chin from an off-the-court injury over the weekend.  Monteiro was in the South Side on New Year's Eve and was hit by a bottle as a result of an argument going on close by.

"We constantly emphasize using discretion in the decisions you make off the court," said head coach Ron Everhart. "As a senior co-captain, B.J. has an obligation to set an example for his teammates. Even though he was not directly involved, the decision he made led to him being in the wrong place at the wrong time and he's now paying the price. I'm disappointed that he had to learn this lesson the hard way."

The Dukes will take on Saint Joseph's (10-3) on Wednesday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center at 7PM. St. Joe's lost to 22nd ranked Harvard on New Year's Eve, 74-69 after having a 10-point lead at the half.
