Steelers Sign RB Chad Spann

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — With running back Rashard Mendenhall out for the season because of an ACL tear, the Steelers signed Chad Spann off the practice squad for depth purposes.

Isaac Redman is expected to start in the backfield and will be spelled by John Clay.

Spann played college ball at Northern Illinois and went undrafted. He spent time on the practice squads of Indianapolis and Tampa Bay before finding his way to Pittsburgh on Dec. 12. Now he'll suit up for the Steelers' Wildcard round game at Denver Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

The game can be seen on KDKA-TV.

To make room for Spann on the 53-man roster, the Steelers placed linebacker Chris Carter (hamstring) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Third-year running back Albert Young was signed to the Steelers practice squad to replace Spann.
