Judge Rules To Delay Use Of 2012 Assessment Numbers
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Judge R. Stanton Wettick has made a decision regarding the delay of the 2012 assessment.
The new numbers will be postponed until 2013.
"We want to make sure that we've allowed the process to go forward, but to make sure they're using reliable numbers when they set the tax rate," Paul Lalley, the solicitor for Pittsburgh Public Schools, said.
Also, the deadline to file an appeal has been pushed back from February 10th to February 24.
"We're going on seven years of unconstitutional taxation," Don Driscoll, the plaintiffs' attorney, said.
The same ruling will also be issued for suburban communities in Allegheny County.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald declared victory.
"We won a big victory today for the citizens of the City of Pittsburgh, as well as citizens of Allegheny County," he said. "We nullified the numbers as I stated a week ago that went out to city residents and they are going to be under the same base year numbers they've been under the last 10 years."
But Fitzgerald says he will not block the 2012 numbers from going out.
"The judge is apparently ordering somebody else to send those numbers out, so I guess those numbers at some point will go out," Fitzgerald said. "They won't be official numbers, they won't be used for taxation purposes."
