Bucs: Pirates Sign Meek, Karstens
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — The Pittsburgh Pirates avoided arbitration with two more pitchers Tuesday, signing reliever Evan Meek and starting pitcher Jeff Karstens to contracts.
Meek signed a one-year, $875,000 contract with built-in incentives that could pay him an additional $25,000 based on performance. Meek was an All-Star in 2010 but struggled with a shoulder injury in 2011 that held him out of action for a large period of time.
Karstens will reportedly earn $3.1 million in 2012, which is up quite a bit from his $1.1 million salary last season. He went 9-9 with a 3.38 ERA in 2011.
Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee are still arbitration eligible.
