Man Dies In Seven Springs Skiing Accident

SEVEN SPRINGS (KDKA) – A man has died from injuries sustained during a skiing accident at Seven Spring Resort.

David McClelland, 36, of Coraopolis, was skiing on Phillips Run, a beginner's trail. For reasons unknown, he went off the trail, crossed another beginner's trail and entered a wooded, rocky area where he struck his head and was knocked unconscious.

McClelland was pronounced dead at the scene around 7 p.m. Monday.

A statement from the resort says in part, "All of us at Seven Springs are deeply saddened by the fatal accident that occurred last night. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the gentleman's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time."

McClelland was not wearing a helmet. They are encouraged by the resort, but not required by law.

Kirk Renner, manager of Thrifty Ski Rental, says no one should go snowboarding or skiing without one.

"You never think it's going to happen to you just like a car accident, but when it does, you're glad you had that helmet, that seatbelt or whatever safety equipment available," he said.

State police are investigating.

McClelland worked as a bartender at several area restaurants including P.F. Chang's at Settler's Ridge and Eleven.
