Crude Oil Spill Leaks Onto Ben Avon Road

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A large crude oil spill has Department of Environmental Protection officials cleaning up and looking for the person responsible.

The spill occurred near Courtney Mill Road in Ben Avon Heights.

Officials say that it looks like someone had removed a section of the pipe near the release valve, which caused some 750 gallons of oil to leak out onto the local road.

Shannopin Country Club owns the land where the tank is located, but it is not clear yet who is responsible for the leak.

"The department is going to continue its investigation to determine who is liable for the well and the tank, and then we would look at taking action against them and making them pay for the clean up," Don Bialosky of the DEP Emergency Response Team said.

Whoever caused the leak could also face criminal charges.

Hazmat crews have plugged the tank and cleaned up the oil.
