1 Dead, 4 Injured In Ohio High School Shooting

CHARDON, Ohio (KDKA/AP) -Police are investigating a Monday morning shooting in the cafeteria of a high school in northeastern Ohio.

According to an Associated Press report, four students were injured and one student has died after a shooter described as a classmate opened fire at an Ohio high school.

Special Agent Vicki Anderson said the shooter was taken into custody near his car about half a mile away from the high school.

FBI agent Scott Wilson said after the shooting that there was one suspected shooter.

The shooting was reported around 7:30 a.m. at the 1,100-student Chardon High School, said Civil Deputy Erin Knife of the Geauga County Sheriff's Office.

"A very horrible traumatic experience this morning. Our prayers go out to the five victims and their families first and foremost. Again, we shift our mode into looking at them. We feel so disheartened – we certainly hope the families know that they are in our thoughts and prayers," Chardon Schools superintendent Joseph Bergant II said.

A spokeswoman for the Cleveland Clinic says two students were taken to the clinic's Hillcrest Hospital in suburban Cleveland.

A spokeswoman for the Cleveland MetroHealth System says an additional three students were taken to the Cleveland hospital.

There was no word on the extent of the injuries.

A student who was just feet away when a gunman opened fire says a normal morning was interrupted by strange sounds in a hallway, then the sight of the gunman beginning to shoot.

Heather Ziska says she was in the Chardon High School outside cafeteria when she and other students began hearing popping noises in a nearby hallway.

The 17-year-old junior says she then saw a boy with a gun, who she recognized as a fellow student, come into the cafeteria and start shooting.

She says she and several others immediately ran outside, while other friends ran into a middle school and others locked themselves in a teachers' lounge.

Chardon is about 30 miles east of Cleveland and has roughly 5,100 residents.
