Drivers Cope With Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge Closure

SEWICKLEY (KDKA) -- The closure of the Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge caused major delays in Sewickley during rush hour Monday.

Police officers were positioned at key intersection near the Sewickley Bridge to keep traffic moving the best they can.

About 12,000 drivers who used the now-closed bridge now must cross the Ohio River in Sewickley or Rochester.

Drivers knew in advance about the 8-month closure, but it's still a pain.

"Normally it's a 45-minute drive, so it was just across the bridge, it was just sitting in traffic to get across the bridge – it was terrible this morning," Jim Scott, a commuter, said.

The 84-year-old bridge is scheduled for more than $16 million in repairs which will include substructure repairs and replacing the bridge deck.
