School Bus Driver Struck By Car, Killed

SHALER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A 71-year-old school bus driver has died after being hit by a vehicle in a parking lot along Hahn Road this morning in Shaler Township.

The victim has been identified by officials as Carol Eggers.

Just after the morning bus runs were finished, the drivers were returning to the bus garage.

"I drove up the hill here and I seen her laying on the ground," Ralph Danko, a bus driver, said. "There was no ambulance or nothing here yet."

Police say the 46-year-old driver of a red Dodge pickup truck was backing out and claims he never saw Eggers.

"We're looking into that to see whether or not she had already been on the ground or was she struck by the vehicle," Shaler Police Detective Michael Hein said.

Shumway: "Did he physically run over her?"

Hein: "Yes."

Paul Misler got out of his bus at the same time the pickup truck driver exited his vehicle.

"The driver of the pickup truck got out and was all excited and ran to get emergency," he said. "It was terrible."

Like most school bus terminals, the drivers are like a family and they can't believe Eggers is gone.

"I sat with her this morning," Ed Dell said. "She was on one side of the table, I was on the other side of the table. A good woman."

The 46-year-old, who was a bus driver for seven years, was said to be very distraught following the accident. He has since been suspended from bus driving until the accident investigation is complete.
