3 Wounded In Homestead Shooting, Police Looking For Suspects

HOMESTEAD (KDKA) -- Police are searching for suspects after three young people were wounded in a shooting Sunday night at a crowded playground in Homestead.

The gunfire rang out around 6:30 p.m. on 16th Street at the Charlie Batch Playground.

Three juveniles were injured, two females and one male. The identities of the victims have not been released.

"One young lady was lying on her stomach and I grabbed her arm and I took her pulse and her blood pressure; and then I went over to the other gentleman who was lying almost by the park with the lower leg, and I took his blood pressure and his pulse and also looked at his leg," said Darlene Anderson, a witness who helped the victims. "And then, the other young lady up on the steps, she was shot in the upper thigh and I took her pulse and her blood pressure also."

Police in the area were already on high alert. There had been rumors that something might happen, and the rumors proved to be true.

"The playground was pretty full; a lot of people were on the playground. We're getting information from various sources that this was a pre-planned thing," said Chief Jeffrey DeSimone, of Homestead Police. "A group of people was observed and overheard splitting up, preparing to come down here – you come from this side, we'll come from that side – ended up down here and the shots rang out."

Police say a lot of people saw what happened, including innocent bystanders who happened to be playing at the park.

"Very scary to see somebody shooting in front of me," said Rayon Williams, a witness.

Police say one person was detained following the shooting but has since been released. There have been no arrests, but the investigation continues.

"If I was a betting man, I'd tell you there are a lot of people out here that know a lot more about this," said Chief DeSimone. "We'd like to hear from you."

Police believe there may have been more than one shooter.
