Fire Causes Heavy Damage To North Braddock Home

NORTH BRADDOCK (KDKA) – A family, in the process of moving, saw their home go up in flames Monday morning in North Braddock.

Most of the family's belongings were already out of the home, but not all.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the Hawkins Avenue home as firefighters worked tirelessly to put out the flames.

"I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I really wouldn't. But, thank God no one was in there," Norman Carey said.

Carey and his wife said that they had suffered through a house fire years ago. The couple had moved most of their belongings out of this house about three months ago, but their son and his girlfriend were still living there and were planning to move out today.

"Devastating to anybody, no matter who it is. So, it's just not a good thing to anybody," Carey aid.

"Luckily there wasn't anyone in there. Cause we saw a [television] on inside and everybody was kind of worried that someone was still in the house," Tim McCarron said.

McCarron lives next door and said he saw a smoke coming from the house and called 911. However, it didn't take long for the fire to explode throughout the home.

"It started going up very quick. Very quick. There was smoke coming all the way out from the roof line and by the time they got here, it started coming through the roof, the windows were popping and everything else," McCarron said.

Allegheny County fire marshals were called to the scene to determine the nature of the fire and where it started.

The North Braddock Borough President said that the community is really coming together. In fact, she's already received numerous calls from surrounding communities to see if they can help as well.
