Contractor Targets Elderly In Ross Township

ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A contractor is targeting the elderly in Ross Township with fake driveway sealing jobs.

On Memorial Day, an elderly woman was approached. They told the woman they were working in the neighborhood and could do the job the same day since they're already there at a cheap price.

The woman went for it and the men started putting black stuff on her driveway.

"The sealant was splashed all over walls, all over the garage door," Ross Township Commissioner Dan Demarco said.

A few downpours later and the stuff started washing away,

"It wasn't real sealant … it was in fact paint or some paint-like substance," Demarco said.

Fortunately, the woman's money did not wash away with the fake sealant. She was able to stop the check from being paid.

"Never pay for a job upfront or with cash," Caitlin Vancus with the Better Business Bureau said. "It's definitely a red flag if either of those are requested."

And the Better Business Bureau says check out any company at your door through the Better Business Bureau and state Attorney General's office before you sign a contract or write a check.
