Man Pulled From Allegheny River, Taken To Hospital

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man was pulled unresponsive from the Allegheny River near the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on Wednesday morning.

Witnesses say one minute the man was standing by the river and talking on his cell phone, and then he somehow ended up in the water.

People nearby rushed to pull him out, and some even gave him CPR until paramedics could get to the scene.

"Two women were down here and they yelled for help, and so I came down to try to help them," said Kris Walterhouse, a witness. "We were very fortunate that a tall man with long arms came down so we could pull him in."

"I looked out and I saw three women trying to get the gentleman out of the water over the edge, but they couldn't reach him so I just took off down the steps and helped the women pull him out of the water," said Mark Borgman, who was attending a conference at the Convention Center.

The man wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse when he was pulled from the river.

Paramedics were able to establish a heartbeat before they took him to the hospital.
