Delta Adds Flights From Pittsburgh To New York

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- With a little accordion music and a few balloons, Delta Airlines promoted its latest expansion in the Pittsburgh market.

"We're very excited to inaugurate six new non-stop flights from Pittsburgh to LaGuardia Airport in New York City. That's in addition to the three daily flights that we have to JFK at New York," Delta's Von Campanella told KDKA Money Editor Jon Delano.

About 51 passengers were on the inaugural flight leaving Gate D-78 on Wednesday, a flight that was greeted with water cannon as it passed on its way to the runway.

Airport Authority Board Vice Chair Rich Stanizzo says New York is a popular destination.

"Oh, this is big. We've been hearing from the business community especially about more flights to New York, and of course then the leisure people. With this many flights, this is a big deal for us," added Stanizzo.

And these new Delta flights to New York could be the best deal in town. How about $108 roundtrip with 14-day advance purchase? That's cheaper than driving.

Delta says the Pittsburgh flights to LaGuardia are part of its plan to grow their presence in the New York market, but it obviously has benefits to people here.

"I think the market will be happy to support it. It's great great times throughout the day for either the business traveler or the leisure traveler, starting early in the morning through early evening."

And Campanella, Delta's sales manager for the entire Northeast region, says Pittsburgh's airport compares well with other cities.

"It's absolutely a world class facility. Many of the neighboring towns would be happy to have the facility that we have here in Pittsburgh. It really is world class."
