Police Investigate 2nd Fatal Shooting In McKees Rocks

MCKEES ROCKS (KDKA) -- Police are investigating another fatal shooting in McKees Rocks.

The shooting happened inside a first-floor apartment the 400 block of Alexander Street Monday afternoon.

"Apparently the resident here went to a neighbor's home and alerted her to call the police after he shot what he described as an intruder in his home," McKees Rocks Police Chief Robert Cifrulak said.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 21-year-old Kalief Gates of Manchester.

Police say Gates' body was found inside a bedroom in the apartment. He was shot once in the head and twice in the chest with a .9mm handgun.

When the shooter, 21-year-old Chaz Jackson, arrived at Allegheny County Police headquarters, he had few words to say.

Bob Allen: "Self-defense?"

Jackson: "Jesus."

Allen: "Jesus?"

Jackson: "Self-defense. Jesus."

Allen: "Self-defense Jesus? What's Jesus got to do with it?"

Jackson: "You know."

Jackson told police he shot Gates after he broke into his apartment.

Investigators from the county crime lab scoured the apartment, but sources say Jackson's story didn't add up. They have not found evidence of a burglary or a break-in.

"He said there was forced entry and that's the first thing we're looking for," Allegheny County Police Assistant Supt. James Morton said.

Police have not filed charges in the case. Jackson had a permit to legally possess a gun.

Gates was awaiting trial on charges of robbery, drug possession and aggravated assault.
