Stolen Car Sinks To Bottom Of Mon River

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - A car under water sent rescue divers scrambling on the South Side Monday morning.

The major concern initially was if someone was inside.

There were some pretty intense moments and a situation of uncertainty at the edge of the Mon River as River Rescue divers and other emergency crews were called to the area.

A Pittsburgh Police officer on regular patrol near South Side Riverfront Park spotted a car floating down the river around 3 a.m.

"At that point in time, River Rescue was called to determine whether there was anybody in it," River Rescue Operations Chief Richard Linn Jr. said. "There was not anybody in it. The vehicle was found, divers searched the vehicle and found nobody in the vehicle."

The Chevy Malibu was empty, but the car turned out to be stolen.

As for what happens to the vehicle now, River Rescue is going to leave it at the bottom of the river along with two other vehicles they found this morning because there is no threat to river traffic.
