McKeesport Marks National Day Out

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) -- Communities across the country marked the annual National Night Out in their own way.

The event raises awareness about violence and unites neighbors to combat crime.

In the city of McKeesport, residents want that message to resonate louder than ever. Police there are investigating several recent shootings.

On Tuesday, the Haler Heights Crime Watch organized a walk through the streets which ended in a community celebration with entertainment and family games.

Even though their streets haven't been impacted by the violence, they admit the crimes are on everyone's mind.

The mayor and the police chief joined the walk. Chief Bryan Washowich told KDKA's Kym Gable his department is working around the clock.

He urged residents to stay strong and come forward with any information about the crimes.

Organizers say this was the largest National Night Out event ever held in McKeesport.
