2012 Great Race Officially Sold Out

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Registration for the 2012 Great Race is officially closed after setting a new record.

A total of 15,000 runners and walkers are now signed up to participate in this year's event.

The race is now sold out with about six weeks left to race day on Sept. 30.

"Today we are pleased to announce that we have reached the 15,000 participant mark and Great Race registration is now closed," Race Director Mike Radley, who serves as director of the City's Department of Parks and Recreation said in a statement. "This 2012 field of runners and walkers sets a new record for the race."

In 2011, the race set a new registration record at 14,500. As a result of the high turnout, organizers added an additional 500 slots for this year's event.

The 5K run/walk will begin at 8 a.m. in Oakland with the 10K run/walk starting in Frick park at 9:30 a.m.

Both events will end at Point State Park.
