Police Await Toxicology Results In Newborn's Death

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The life of James Victor, Jr. spanned only five weeks.

Three of those weeks were spent in a hospital because of his mother's prenatal heroin addiction.

"They took very good care of him," Kari Lager, the baby's aunt, said. "He was always in their arms. He was never neglected in any way."

James Victor, 51, and Nicole Dull, 31, the baby's parents, were arrested Friday evening at the Super 8 Motel in Butler Township.

Inside, police found Victor and Dull who appeared to be trying to intentionally overdose on drugs. The newborn was lying dead in a baby carrier, blue and cold.

"They wanted to go to heaven with their baby," Lager said.

On Friday morning at the Avalon Motel on Route 65, a cleaning woman found a suicide note taped to the dresser mirror in Room 124.

In it, the couple wrote that they discovered their lifeless child in his crib at their apartment on Benjamin Street in West Deer early Wednesday morning from no apparent cause.

Worried that their drug history would mean trouble, they panicked taking his body with them and checking into the Avalon.

"For fear of them taking him away from them and because of their history they didn't want to do through that," Lager said.

When the note was discovered, 911 was called and an intense search began, ending at the Super 8 where Allegheny County Police tracked them.

Nicole's family says she was so happy when her baby was born, says her sister in tears.

"Our whole family was very supportive and we just don't understand."

James Jr.'s parents remain in the Allegheny County Jail.
