Kitchen Remodeling Doesn't Have To Be Expensive

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you're thinking about updating your kitchen, you know it can be an costly project.

Kitchen remodeling jobs can be some of the most expensive, but fixing up an outdated kitchen can be worth it.

"The good news is, you can get a good return on your investment when you remodel your kitchen," says Angie Hicks, of Angie's List. "You can see up to an 85 percent return on your investment on a good remodel job."

But you don't need to break the bank to get a whole new look.

"Doing things like replacing the sink and the faucet, depending on the type and materials you use, you can do that for $150, or replacing your countertops for $500," adds Hicks.

And when it comes to cabinets, just changing the color can update your kitchen, give you a more modern look and save you money.

"The average kitchen cabinets out there, you are looking at replacing them, just cabinets alone - no countertops or anything of that nature - usually $10,000," said Kevin Jones, a contractor. "A re-facing job is $67,000, and for us to do a color change average job runs $3,000. So, you can see the drastic price difference."

Also, installing new lighting can make a big difference in making your kitchen seem bigger.

"Swapping out fixture lighting for recessed or track lighting can help you highlight particular features in the kitchen," Hicks says. "Adding lighting underneath your cabinets can make dark areas lighter and appear larger."

Even adding something as simple as a garbage disposal can bring your kitchen more up to date.
