Police Investigating Indiana Co. Woman's Death

HILLSIDE (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a woman was declared dead from an apparent drug overdose in Indiana County Saturday morning.

According to the Indiana County Coroner's Office, Billijo Marie Akins, 23, of Derry Township, was pronounced dead around 6:15 a.m. at the Citizens' Ambulance Service location in Blairsville.

According to her ex-husband, Akins had been at Tommasini's Tavern and was allegedly using injectable drugs.

Her ex-husband, Justin Foster, arrived at the bar to give her a ride. However, he said they fell asleep in the truck and when he woke up, Akins was unresponsive. At that time, Foster drove to the ambulance station, where paramedics determined she was beyond the help of medical intervention.

The preliminary findings of an autopsy indicated that the cause of death was related to a narcotics overdose.

Coroner Michael Baker believes that heroin was the drug used in this incident, but toxicology results are pending.

State police are investigating the incident and there is no word if charges will be filed.
