Alleged Hit-And-Run Driver In Ambridge Was Texting

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) -- Police say a local teenager was texting while driving when she hit a man with her car, then drove away leaving him lying in the road.

Sa'miyah Thompkins, 4, was riding her bike with her grandfather in Economy Village in Ambridge Tuesday when he was struck by a car.

Bernie Thompkins, 52, was thrown over the hood and landed on the road. He suffered head and leg injuries.

Police say 19-year-old Rebecca Kirkland was texting at the time of the crash. She also didn't have a license.

"Anything that you do recklessly that causes you to not be paying attention while you're driving does make the charge a little more severe," Ambridge Police Sgt. Glen Sovich said.

Kirkland is in the Beaver County Jail on $5,000 bond.
