Local Catholic Schools Receive National Recognition

CONNELLSVILLE (KDKA) -- Pride and excitement filled the gymnasium today at Geibel Catholic High School in Connellsville.

The Cardinal Newman Society just named Geibel Catholic as one of the nation's top 50 Catholic high schools.

Geibel was chosen for its overall performance in academic excellence, Catholic identity and civic education.

"I feel like that is just one of the greatest honors a Catholic high school can receive," Brianna Workman, a student, said.

Geibel isn't the only school recognized in western Pennsylvania.

Aquinas Academy in Gibsonia, Oakland Catholic in Pittsburgh, Saint Joseph in Natrona Heights, Quigley Catholic High School in Baden and Serra Catholic in McKeesport are also in the top 50.

Pennsylvania has the highest number of honorees with seven schools selected throughout the state.

It's the first time Geibel Catholic has received the honor.

It's a huge accomplishment for the entire school and the principal, Don Favero, who's only been on the job a-year-and-a-half.

"We have a wonderful synergy," he said. "We use the latest university methodologies in our teaching and our classroom dynamics. We also embrace the gospel values of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
