3 Men Charged In String Of Copper Thefts

GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- Three men are under arrest for allegedly breaking into dozens of homes in Westmoreland County.

Homes in Latrobe, Derry Township and New Alexandria were targeted in the incidents.

Police say the suspects were after the copper inside, stealing wiring and plumbing.

According to authorities, they hit up homes that were for sale and empty.

"Over a course of several months, these individuals were entering residences that were unoccupied at the time, many of the homes were for sale when they would go into these homes and would strip all the copper wiring and all the copper plumbing out of the homes," said Trooper Steve Limani, of the State Police.

Also, officials say a lot of damage was done during the break-ins.

"A lot of the times, they were able to walk into the house because the door was unlocked, but many of the times they were forcing their way through back doors or prying open windows; and once they were inside, they were causing a tremendous amount of damage, ripping out copper wiring and copper plumbing," Trooper Limani said.

Police say if you have a home for sale and it is vacant, make sure it's locked up and check on it frequently.
