Woman Accused Of Stealing $20k From Elderly Aunt

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A Cheswick woman is accused of stealing $20,000 from her 101-year-old aunt.

Authorities say 53-year-old Kathryn Romea spent more than $20,000 of aunt Rose Danielle's money while she had Power of Attorney over her.

Police say between December 2010 and April 2012, Romea spent Danielle's savings and social security payments at various places, some included Target, Starbucks, Old Navy and Walt Disney World Reservations. She also allegedly paid legal fees, car payments and other bills with the money.

Danielle signed a statement in May that said, "I did not give Kathryn any money, including the $7,000 Kathryn claims I gave her when she began to manage my bank account and/or became my Power of Attorney. I want Kathryn to return the money and any other money or property she has of mine, immediately," according to a police criminal complaint.

In the time that Romea had POA over her aunt, she allegedly moved Danielle in and out of various nursing homes – bringing her back home when she wanted to use the money on other things, such as a trip during spring break.

Romea surrendered herself to police Wednesday.

Her preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 7.
