Authorities Identify Victim Of Fatal Pedestrian Crash In Unity Twp.

UNITY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Authorities in Westmoreland County say they have identified the pedestrian who died after being struck by a vehicle Saturday evening in Unity Township.

The accident happened just after 9:30 p.m. along State Route 982 near the State Route 30 Cloverleaf.

The Westmoreland County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as 41-year-old Robert Steininger of Youngstown Borough in Westmoreland County. He died from blunt force trauma to the head, chest and abdomen.

According to state police, the victim was walking south on State Route 982 when he crossed the southbound lane and was hit by an on-coming vehicle heading north.

Investigators say the driver of the vehicle tried to avoid hitting the man, but wasn't able to.

Steininger was pronounced dead at the scene just before 11 p.m.

He was not carrying identification at the time of the accident.
