Report: Girl Mistaken For Animal, Accidentally Shot In Beaver County

NEW SEWICKLEY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Authorities in Beaver County are investigating after a 9-year-old girl, dressed up for a Halloween party, was injured Saturday evening when she was reportedly mistaken for a skunk and accidentally shot.

According to the Beaver County Times, the incident happened in the 300-block of Brewer Road in New Sewickley Township around 8:30 p.m.

The Beaver County Times reports the girl was outside, wearing a costume that was black and also had on a black hat with a white tassel when a family member mistakenly thought she was an animal.

The girl was taken by medical helicopter to UPMC Children's Hospital for treatment of a shotgun wound to the shoulder, according to the Beaver County Times. Her condition has not been released, but she was reportedly conscious while being taken to the hospital.

Authorities have not released the identities of the girl or the male family member.

The investigation continues. The case is being handed over to the Beaver County District Attorney's Office.
