Legendary Actress In Town For Showing Of Movie Classic

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Famed actress Eva Marie Saint will be on stage at the Byham Theater Tuesday night, for a showing of an all-time movie classic.

She won her first Academy Award for her role in "On the Waterfront," and, at the age of 88, she's still working.

She matched up with Marlon Brando in the 1954 film. In her very first performance, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

"I gave birth two days later to our son," she says, in an interview with KDKA's Dave Crawley. "He's 57. And really, that was on my mind a lot. And none of us expected to win anything for that movie."

The legendary star is appearing at the Byham Theater, where the film will be shown as the Pittsburgh visit is the second stop on TCM Network's "Road to Hollywood" tour.

TCM host Ben Mankiewicz says the actress will join him on stage to talk about the film.

"If there are 25 movies in America that still matter to America, that still matter to an enormous percentage of the audience, I think 'On the Waterfront' and 'North by Northwest' are two of them," Mankiewicz says. "And I don't think it's an accident that Eva Marie Saint was in both of them."

"North by Northwest" was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, who is now the subject of a controversial HBO docudrama.

"The actresses all seem to have a different point of view," says Eva Marie Saint. "But I'm not Pollyanna; it's just that I loved working with him. He was a perfect gentleman.

The actress was kissed by Cary Grant in "North by Northwest," Marlon Brando in "On the Waterfront," and Paul Newman in "Exodus."

"You don't even think about it," she says. "You're acting. You're the character. This is what's happening. I happen to be married to a director, which helps. There's no jealousy."
