2 Children Hit By Vehicle, 1 Dead

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating after one child was killed and another was injured after being hit by a vehicle in Lawrence County Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the incident happened around 2:15 p.m. in New Castle.

The two boys, ages 7 and 9, were hit in front of their home near the intersection of Winslow and Stanton Avenues.

The Lawrence County Medical Examiner's office says the 7-year-old boy died shortly after the accident.

It also said the 9-year-old boy was initially taken to  Jamison Hospital and later flown to Children's Hospital.

"The children were in their yard, actually on their steps in the front yard," witness Dennis Case said. "And I have no idea how he ended up there, what was on his mind, what he was doing. At this point, I don't care what he was thinking."

Police have arrested 66-year-old Virgil Coonfare, who was driving the yellow truck that hit the two boys.

"I saw the guy in the yellow truck and he came up over the hill and the kid was sitting on the steps and he just went over and hit him," witness Layne Brown said.

But witnesses say Coonfare didn't stop until he got further down the street. He also ran into a parked car and a stop sign.

"He didn't have a right shoe on," Case said. "I'm not sure what that was all about and he was wobbling pretty bad. I'm not sure if that was from the accident or not."

Coonfare is charged with homicide by motor vehicle.

Police say additional charges are still pending.
