New Exhibit Features Portraits Of Pittsburgh Women
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A whole new generation of young women is making their mark on Pittsburgh in medicine, business, performance arts and through good works.
Now some of those faces, beautiful inside and out, have been put on canvas.
Painter Sonja Sweterlitsch's Greenfield living room doubles as a studio with a T.V. table for a palette, surrounded by her baby daughter's playthings.
Sweterlitsch captures portraits with nearly photographic realism.
"Some of them are friends and others were people that I wanted to meet, that I was inspired by," Sweterlitsch said.
Over the past three years, the 35-year-old artist has applied her brush to 16 portraits, all young women of Pittsburgh, all "Beautiful Dreamers."
Even the women she didn't know did not refuse and showed up at her door.
Laura Miller is from the "Secret Agent L Project," which is an international kindness movement.
From ballerinas to baristas, her subjects radiate more than mere likeness.
Even in the delivery room, when Genevieve arrived one-and-a-half years ago, Sweterlitsch looked up at the eyes above the surgical mask and saw possibility.
"A lot happening at that time in the hospital," she said. "It was the first time I saw her and I just thought, 'she has the most beautiful eyes.'"
Trained at Carnegie-Mellon, Sweterlitsch has ties to the Pittsburgh cultural trust, the center for the arts, and the Three Rivers Arts Festival.
Her work is her journey.
Art lovers will have the chance to share Sweterlitsch's vision and celebrate these women this Friday at the "Fe Gallery" on Butler Street in Lawrenceville, it continues through Jan. 11.
