Police Searching For Copper Thieves After Burglaries At Wilkinsburg Restaurants

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- Wilkinsburg Police and Allegheny County Police are investigating after a soon-to-open restaurant was targeted recently by copper thieves.

In fact, police say another restaurant on the same street was also hit by thieves and a third restaurant nearby was broken into, but the intruders were scared off, when the owner showed up.

Wilkinsburg Police Sgt. Wayne McKenith told KDKA-TV that seven large-screen televisions, copper pipe, wiring, stainless steel kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies and even several pairs of the owner's 13½-inch shoes were stolen in a burglary last month.

The burglars replaced the shoes with a 10½-inch pair.

McKenith said several days after that burglary, someone broke into the Soul Food Connection restaurant on Wood Street; and this week, a burglary was thwarted at the Wood Street Bread Company.

McKenith says he thinks all the thefts could be the work of the same person or persons.

The owner of the creole restaurant told KDKA-TV that he found it hard to believe that no one reported anything unusual or suspicious to police the night his place of business was burglarized.

That's because the crime had to take several hours since so much was stolen.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Pittsburgh Crime Stoppers at 412-255-8477.
