Man Found Guilty In Murder Of W. Va. Sheriff's Deputy
WAYNESBURG (KDKA) - Jerod Green had nothing to say to reporters after he learned a Greene County jury convicted him on charges including third-degree murder, homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence.
Last February, he led police on a chase from West Virginia across the Pennsylvania line after they tried to pull him over for drunk driving and fleeing the scene of a previous accident.
Monongalia County, W. Va. Sheriff Sgt. Michael Todd May was killed when his vehicle was rammed by Green's truck.
The victim's brother hugged his mother, and was emotional after the verdict.
"I just want to say that Todd was a great man. That he believed in helping others. He dedicated his life to it and today he took a violent criminal and murderer off the street," Frankie May said.
Monongalia County Sheriff Al Kisner said the verdict gives both the family and his staff some closure.
"The officers have waited 10 months for this to come to an end," Kisner said.
However, the defense argued May positioned his car such that the crash was inevitable on the median of Interstate 79.
"The deciding factor? That's a good question. Quite frankly, I don't think he caused that accident. I think the evidence was in support of the officer pulling in front of him giving him no choice," defense attorney John Bongivengo said.
The jury disagreed and Green faces 20 to 40 years on the third-degree murder conviction alone.
He will likely be sentenced in the next few months.
