Last-Minute Shoppers Hustle At The Mall

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- As the number of hours to shop has decreased, we've seen the pace of shopping pick up and we've seen the procrastinator, the bargain hunter and the occasional person who just likes to be part of this atmosphere.

KDKA's John Shumway went to the Mall in Robinson to talk to some of those last-minute shoppers and see what they're up to.

"We go out and have breakfast and then we come out and shop a little bit just to get out in the hustle and bustle," Roger Thomas of Oakmont said.

While the hustle and bustle pace of this final day of shopping is nowhere close to the weekend frenzy, there is an urgent nature about this day.

"Uh, this, planned a little last minute stuff so my wife doesn't know about it," Alan Welding of South Fayette said.

When asked if she waited until the last minute, Heiku Fonzi said "Yes I did. That's what happens when you have two kids right?"

She's not alone. For many, the nature of life forces a last-minute mall dash.

"I just got back from school," Brian Wilking of Imperial said. "I go to Penn State and had some stuff to finish up over the weekend and get some stuff for my dad since he's at work."

And KDKA found a few folks who went to the mall to help the anxious anticipation of this day pass a little more quickly.

"I decided to help my wife out," Brendon Costa of Moon Township said. "She's home cooking and cleaning and I decided to take all three kids to see Santa today."

Some of the requests Santa got were for a dollhouse, remote control helicopter and other toys – a hefty list for the old guy who was taking request right up to the last minute, before heading north.

"I actually enjoy going to the mall and shopping," Gregory Buck of McDonald said. "It's a fun experience for me and I like the whole Christmas idea of wrapping and time with your family. It's all so fun for me."

One benefit for the procrastinators is that many of the stores have already implemented their post-Christmas sales.

These discounts and some even deeper will come the day after Christmas, but it's a nice little bonus for those last minute shoppers.
