Washington Co. Grandmother Accused Of Leaving Kids Home Alone

SOUTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A Washington County woman is accused of leaving her two preschool-age grandchildren home alone for several hours.

On Monday, authorities said 911 received a call from a little girl in a home on Clearfield Avenue in South Strabane.

When police got there, officials say they found a 5-year-old girl and her 3-year-old brother.

Police say their grandmother, identified as 60-year-old Catherine McClelland, left them alone so she could go to work.

According to police, officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 Special Revolver left within reach of the children.

Neighbors say McClelland is a good woman, who made a bad decision.

"Irresponsible, that's all it is," said Nancy Fullen, a concerned resident. "You can find someone. I'm sorry, you don't leave they by themselves. You can ask a neighbor, you can ask a friend and there's agencies."

McClelland told police that she needed to go to work those eight hours because she needs money in order to take care of the children.

Children, Youth and Family Services have taken custody of the children. McClelland will get a summons about the charges in the mail.
